Leaking Roof
A leaking roof rarely fixes itself and usually gets worse with each spell of rain. Here's what can cause it and what to do while you wait for help.

Possible causes
- Slipped, cracked or missing slates or tiles
- Failed lead flashing at chimneys or abutments
- Blocked or worn valleys
- Cracked ridge or hip mortar
- Overflowing gutters backing up under the eaves
Warning signs
- Water stains or drips from the ceiling
- Damp patches high on walls
- Wet insulation or timbers in the loft
- Musty smells upstairs
How it's usually fixed
- Replacing damaged slates or tiles
- Renewing flashing or valley linings
- Re-bedding or dry-fixing ridges
- Temporary weatherproofing in an emergency
When to call a roofer
Call as soon as you see water coming in, especially near light fittings. Contain the water, isolate electrics if needed and stay out of the loft if it's unsafe.
This page describes possible causes only. We can't diagnose your roof without inspecting it.
