Warning Signs of Roof Damage Every Homeowner Should Know
The early warning signs of roof problems — and when to call a roofer before a small issue becomes an expensive one.
Inside the house
Water stains on ceilings or high on walls, damp or musty smells in the loft, and daylight visible through the roof structure all indicate a problem. Check your loft after heavy rain — that's when leaks show themselves.
Outside the house
From ground level, look for slipped or missing slates, sagging along the ridge line, crumbling chimney mortar, and overflowing gutters. Binoculars help. Never climb onto the roof yourself.
Act early
A slipped slate costs little to refix. The rotten timbers and damaged plaster it causes after a year of leaks cost far more. If you spot any of these signs, book an inspection.
