How Long Does a New Roof Take?

Typical timescales for re-roofing a London house, and what can make a job run longer.

What happens and in what order

Scaffolding goes up first, then the old covering is stripped one section at a time so the house is never left exposed overnight. New underlay, battens and the covering follow, then ridges, hips and leadwork, and finally the scaffold comes down.

What affects the timescale

The size and complexity of the roof, the number of chimneys, dormers and valleys, weather, material lead times and any timber repairs discovered once the old covering is off. We give you a realistic programme in writing before starting.

Living at home during the work

Most homeowners stay in the house throughout. Expect noise during the strip-off and some dust in the loft — it's worth covering anything stored up there.
