What Is the Best Material for a Flat Roof?
Felt, GRP and EPDM compared — how each flat roof system performs and where it suits best.
Built-up felt
Modern torch-on felt systems are a familiar, cost-effective option and easy to repair. They're well suited to simple garage and outbuilding roofs.
GRP (fibreglass)
A seamless, hard-wearing finish that copes well with light foot traffic, making it popular for extensions, dormers and small balconies. Quality depends heavily on dry conditions and careful installation.
EPDM (rubber)
A single-sheet rubber membrane that's flexible, tolerant of temperature changes and often installed with few or no joins. A strong choice for larger flat roofs.
