Roof Moss Problems
A little moss is mostly cosmetic, but heavy growth holds water and can lift tiles and block gutters.
Possible causes
- Shaded, north-facing slopes
- Overhanging trees
- Porous or rough-textured tiles
Warning signs
- Thick moss clumps on tiles
- Moss in gutters and downpipes
- Lifted tile edges
How it's usually fixed
- Careful hand removal
- Clearing gutters afterwards
- Repairing any damaged tiles found
When to call a roofer
Have heavy moss removed by a roofer — pressure washing can damage tiles and force water in.
This page describes possible causes only. We can't diagnose your roof without inspecting it.
